On October 1, 2024, we had the honor of welcoming a delegation from the Public Service Commission (PSC) of the Republic of Kenya. The PSC is an independent commission established in 2010, with its mandate and functions outlined in the Constitution of Kenya. Its responsibilities include the creation and abolition of positions, ensuring the provision of competent human resources, promoting good governance, and guaranteeing efficiency in delivering quality public services.
This event, promoted by Moodle and held at the Nord Campus of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona, aimed to provide the PSC with insights into how the Moodle platform has been utilized in other countries to enhance the skills of public employees. Moreover, they sought to gather valuable experiences that could support their ambition to establish a University for the Public Sector in Kenya. To that end, as a Premium Partner of Moodle, IThinkUPC shared some of our most significant projects based on this learning platform.
The first project we shared was the virtual campus Atenea at UPC, in collaboration with Antoni Hernández from the Institut de Ciències de l’Educació (ICE) at UPC and Sisco Villas from UPC’s TIC Area.
Developed in 2004 and for many years recognized as Spain’s largest Moodle-based virtual campus, Atenea currently supports over 35,000 students, manages 10,000 classrooms each academic year, and delivers more than 80 million pages per month. This link provides access to the case study of the Atenea platform.
The second project we presented was the Moodle campus developed by IThinkUPC for Unite!, in collaboration with Jesús Alcober, the delegate appointed by the UPC rector for the Unite! Digital Campus, and Xavier Molins, the project’s Project Manager.
Unite! is an alliance of nine European technological universities: UPC (Spain), Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany), Aalto University (Finland), Graz University of Technology (Austria), Grenoble INP – Graduate School of Engineering and Management – University Grenoble Alpes (France), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Politécnico di Torino (Italy), Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal), and Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (Poland). Created to contribute to the European Universities Initiatives proposed by the European Commission, the nine partner universities of Unite! collaborate to form a trans-European campus, sharing a common vision regarding regional integration, technology transfer, and education in engineering and science, with complementary multidisciplinary approaches. Unite! spans all regions of Europe and brings together 280,000 students. This link provides more information about the Unite! metacampus created by IThinkUPC.
Finally, the event concluded with a visit to the Data Processing Center (CPD) at UPC, which is managed and maintained by IThinkUPC. Currently, UPC’s CPD hosts over 1,500 virtual servers and supports the university’s primary corporate services, including the Atenea campus, the academic management system, email, financial and human resource management, as well as telephone services.
