ATENEA UPC is one of the largest Moodle installations in Spain. It serves over 35,000 students, 3,500 professors, and 10,000 classrooms each academic year.
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) is one of Spain’s top universities and a leading technical university in Europe. Due to the technological obsolescence of UPC’s previous virtual campus, the University Board established a review committee in 2004. It was essential to adapt the virtual campus to new teaching and management requirements, make it more user-friendly, enhance its integration with the rest of UPC’s information systems, and all while utilizing free and open-source software.
After a study conducted in direct collaboration with the teaching staff and all relevant departments of the University including end-user students IThinkUPC designed a Moodle-based learning platform, ATENEA, which currently provides online education to over 35,000 students and is growing at an annual rate of 20%. ATENEA manages 10,000 classrooms each academic year and delivers more than 80 million pages per month. It was one of the first 24/7 services offered by UPC, achieving outstanding performance.
