Unified Communications for the UOC

We deploy our unified communications platform eConnect for 1000 users at the UOC.

Challenge

The UOC needed to particularly support mobility among its centers, given that the Castelldefels campus was about to relocate to MediaTIC in Barcelona and there were additional pending deployments for newly established campuses. Being able to offer the experience of radically transforming the communications system of a university of UPC’s size and complexity was a key element of the project.

Project

The project consisted of a first phase of pilot test with around 74 users. The success of this test leads to a progressive implementation of the eConnect communications platform which currently provides service to more than 1,000 users.

The project consists of:

  • Integration project of the eConnect unified communications service, considering the appropriate resources for the design and validation of the technical implementation solution.
  • Supply, management and maintenance of the equipment that allows the interconnection of the two communication networks.
  • Deployment of the service to end users.
  • Provision of the eConnect service.

Results

Beyond the benefits for end users, the UOC confirmed that eConnect generates significant savings in the maintenance of communication infrastructures. Specifically, it reduces the maintenance costs of telephone systems by about 50%, along with additional savings due to lower call costs.

In the case of universities like the UOC, these expenses can be further reduced if the platform utilizes IP call technologies based on the ENUM directory and NRENUM. The NRENUM environment, widely used in the European academic and research sector, allows calls to be directly routed between academic institutions via the IP network in a transparent, cost-free manner.
